XLPE Foam (Cross Linked Polyethylene) 12" x 24" Sheet
Pickup available at 345 Roosevelt Ave
Usually ready in 2-4 days
Closed-cell foam for shoulder straps, hip belts, back panels, and frame sheets. Cross-linking bonds the polymer chains, which gives XLPE a finer, more uniform cell structure than standard polyethylene foam. In practice that means it holds its shape under load instead of packing out, and it won't soak up water, so a strap that gets rained on doesn't stay wet against your back for the rest of the trip.
Two things to pick. Density sets how firm it feels: 2lb is softer with more give, good for back panels and general cushioning, while 4lb is firmer and better where you need support under a load, like a hip belt on a heavy pack. Thickness sets how much padding: 1/4" for back panels and light padding, 1/2" for shoulder straps and hip belts. It cuts cleanly with a sharp blade or scissors and takes a contour if you shape it. Face it with spacer mesh for breathability against the body.
