12 oz Cotton Canvas | 100% Cotton Duck

A proper heavy cotton canvas at 12 oz per square yard, ready to work. This is the weight that sits right in the middle of the useful range: heavy enough that a tote holds its shape empty and a tool roll does not sag when loaded, light enough that a domestic machine can still get through a folded hem without a fight.

The width is the part worth paying attention to. Most cotton duck comes off the roll at 44 or 58 inches. This is 60, which sounds like a small difference until you are laying out a jacket back or an apron body and you find you can nest two pattern pieces side by side where you could only fit one. On a wide-panel project that is a meaningful saving per metre.

It is untreated, which is the point. There is no wax, no coating, and no finish sitting between you and the cloth, so it takes dye, it takes wax, and it takes a stencil or a screen print cleanly. If you have been wanting to wax your own canvas rather than buy it pre-waxed, this is the base fabric to do it with, and 12 oz is a forgiving weight to learn on.

It sews like cotton, which is to say easily and predictably. It presses and holds a crease, so hems and gussets stay where you put them. It frays at a raw edge, so plan on binding, folding, or overlocking anything exposed. And it will shrink on the first wash the way all untreated cotton does, so if the finished piece will ever go through a machine, wash the yardage before you cut it.
