UltraGrid is what happens when you take a normal gridstop and replace the reinforcement yarn with something serious. Most gridstop fabrics run a heavier nylon or polyester thread through the weave at intervals. This one runs a double 200 denier Ultra grid, which is UHMWPE, the same fibre class used in cut-resistant gloves and climbing cord. The result is a 3.9 oz fabric that resists tearing well out of proportion to its weight.
The base cloth is 210 denier recycled nylon, spun from pre-consumer industrial waste and woven at a bluesign approved facility. It is finished with a C0 DWR that contains no PFCs, and backed with a 1500mm PU coating. That means water beads and runs off the face, and sustained rain will not push through the coating. It is not a film laminate and it is not a dry bag fabric.
What makes it worth the price is the balance. Laminates like EcoPak and X-Pac are waterproof and structural, but they are also stiff and they crinkle. UltraGrid drapes. It is quiet, it folds soft, it packs down, and it still shrugs off the abrasion that would open up a plain 210d nylon.
One honest warning, and our customers say it before we do: this fabric is genuinely difficult to cut. The UHMWPE grid does not want to shear. A fresh rotary blade or a pair of composite or Kevlar rated shears makes it easy. A dull pair of fabric scissors makes it miserable.
Best for bikepacking frame bags and feed bags, pack bodies and lids, hip belts and shoulder straps, stuff sacks, and reinforcement panels where you want abrasion resistance without adding stiffness. Eleven colours, sold per half yard
